Eliza Lende, our eloquent tour guide in Juneau, turned out to be Heather Lende’s oldest daughter!
When we met Eliza, we didn’t know about her mom being a writer. Then when we went on a rainforest hike in Haines, Judy (our guide for the hike) told us about one of Heather Lende’s books. Ms. Lende is Haines’ beloved writer-in-residence. She writes for Haines’s Chilkat Valley News and is a contributor for NPR’s Morning Edition. Her column for the Anchorage Daily News won the 2002 Suzan Nightingale McKay Best Columnist Award.
I now have both of her books, If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name and Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs. If you’re a fan of Annie Dillard and Anne Lamott, you’ll love Heather Lende. Her style is clear, unadorned, and authentic. She has a blog too! Come visit. Her writings and photos will make you want to hop on the next plane (or ship) and head for wild and beautiful Alaska.
